Rajmata Kamlendumati shah of Tehri Garhwal was an illustrious social worker of her time she dedicated her entire life and wealth to the education of women and other welfare activities.
She started the construction of a college building in November 1959. In July 1961, classes for girls started functioning in that incomplete building. Then the president of India Dr. Radha Krishnan inaugurated the building on the 20th of March 1963, her 60th birthday. He also laid the foundation stone of a girl’s hostel on the same day. This institution was called the ‘Narendra Mahila Vidyalaya Bhagirathi Puram’ and has now been shifted to the Bhagirathipuram (new Tehri).
The same year, She started ‘Indumati Andh Shishu Sharanalaya Society’, an institute for blind children in memory of her sister. ‘Jan Sewa Ashram Society, a home for old people who have no means of livelihood was also started in 1965. These two institutions are no longer functional as these activities have been taken over day the government.
She placed two private member bills before the parliament in this respect.
- First bill [1954] – The frist bill was introduced in 1954 for the issuance of licenses to institution working for the betterment of women and children.
- Second bill [1955] – The second bill was introduced in 1955, pushed for the restriction of immoral trafficking of women.
Rajmata kamlendumati shah was awarded the tittle of Padma Bhushan by the Goverment of india on 28 October 1958 in recognition of her pioneering social work.
